Drywall Cracks, Nail Pops & Water Damage: A DFW Fix Guide

North Texas is hard on drywall. Between expansive clay soil, big temperature swings, and the occasional roof or plumbing leak, cracks, nail pops, and water stains are some of the most common calls we get. Here's what's really going on, and how each is fixed for good.
Most drywall cracks in North Texas homes are cosmetic, caused by clay soil expanding and contracting with the seasons. Hairline cracks that stay the same size for years, and nail pops along studs, are normal movement and a straightforward patch-and-paint. Cracks wider than a quarter inch, cracks running diagonally from door and window corners, or cracks that widen over a few months warrant a foundation evaluation before any repair.
Why DFW Homes Crack
The soil under most DFW homes is expansive clay. It swells when wet and shrinks when dry, moving the slab underneath your house. That movement telegraphs up into the drywall as cracks, usually above doors and windows where the wall is weakest.
Hairline cracks that come and go with the seasons are usually cosmetic. Cracks that keep widening, run diagonally from corners, or come with sticking doors can signal foundation movement worth having evaluated.
Nail Pops, and Why They Come Back
A nail pop is a little round bump or crack where a fastener has backed out of the stud. Framing shrinks as it dries and the house moves, pushing the fastener head against the drywall. The wrong fix is to just mud over it. It'll pop again. The right fix is to drive a screw an inch or two away to re-anchor the board, reset or remove the popped fastener, then patch and texture.
Water Damage: Fix the Source First
A brown ring on the ceiling or a soft, bubbling patch means water got in. The single most important step is finding and stopping the source: roof, plumbing, or HVAC, before any drywall work. Patching over active moisture just traps it and invites mold.
Once it's dry, we cut out the compromised drywall, check for mold, replace the board, and texture-match. Painting over a stain without removing wet material is the #1 mistake we're called to redo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are drywall cracks in my DFW home serious?
Most seasonal hairline cracks are cosmetic and easily repaired. Widening or diagonal cracks with sticking doors can indicate foundation movement. We'll tell you honestly if you should have it evaluated first.
Why do my nail pops keep coming back?
Because they were mudded over instead of re-anchored. We refasten the drywall to the stud, remove or reset the popped fastener, then patch and texture so it stays put.
Can you fix a water-stained ceiling?
Yes, but the leak has to be stopped and the area dried first. We then cut out the damaged drywall, check for mold, replace, retexture, and repaint so the stain doesn't bleed back through.
