LVP vs. Engineered Hardwood: Which Holds Up in DFW?

By Dillon Hubbard, OnPoint Pros · April 7, 2026 · Updated July 9, 2026

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and engineered hardwood are the two most popular flooring options in DFW remodels. Both are great. Here's how to pick.

Choose luxury vinyl plank for durability and water resistance at $3–$7 per square foot installed; choose hardwood for resale value and refinishability at $6–$12. In DFW specifically, LVP handles slab movement and humidity swings with less risk of gapping or cupping, which is why it is the default in kitchens, entries and family rooms. Hardwood still wins in formal areas of higher-end homes.

LVP Wins for Family Life

LVP is waterproof, scratch-resistant, doesn't dent from dropped objects, and tolerates pet accidents without staining. For DFW families with kids and dogs, it's almost always the right answer.

Modern LVP also looks remarkably close to real wood, close enough that most guests can't tell.

Engineered Hardwood Wins for Look and Resale

Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer over a stable plywood core. It feels like wood underfoot, looks like wood up close, and is recognized as a premium material on a resale listing.

It's not waterproof, spills should be wiped quickly, and it's not ideal for bathrooms or laundry rooms. It scratches more easily than LVP. But the look is hard to beat.

Don't Even Consider Solid Hardwood in DFW

Solid 3/4" hardwood expands and contracts with humidity. DFW summers and winters are brutal on it. Engineered hardwood is the modern standard.
