The DFW Homeowner's Guide to Walk-In Showers
By Dillon Hubbard, OnPoint Pros · July 1, 2026 · Updated October 11, 2026
A walk-in shower is the centerpiece of most bathroom remodels we do in DFW. The layout, drainage, waterproofing and material choices need to work together. Here's what to know before you build one.
Waterproofing Is Everything
The single most important part of a walk-in shower is the part you'll never see. The waterproofing system must be compatible with the substrate, pan and drain. Ask which system is included in the written scope and how it will be checked before tile.
Ask any contractor exactly how they waterproof. If the answer is vague or 'the tile keeps water out,' walk away, tile and grout are not waterproof.
Curbless vs. Curbed Entry
A curbed shower has a small threshold to step over and is the traditional, budget-friendly option. A curbless (zero-entry) shower is flush with the floor: sleeker, easier to clean, wheelchair-friendly, and ideal for aging in place, but it requires careful floor sloping and drainage, so it costs a bit more.
Curbless with a linear drain against the wall is the most popular high-end look we build right now.
Glass, Niches, Benches, and Drains
Glass: frameless is the cleanest look; semi-frameless saves money and still looks great. Niches: recessed shelves keep bottles off the floor, plan their height before tiling. Benches: great for shaving, seating, or resting; can be built-in or floating. Drains: a center point drain is standard and economical; a linear drain enables larger tile and curbless entry.
Decide these details before demo, not during, changing them mid-build is where surprise costs come from.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a walk-in shower cost in DFW?
Full bathroom remodels start at $20,000; most full-tile primary bathrooms are $25,000–$45,000 depending on scope and finishes. A walk-in shower can be part of that scope. Start with a planning call; shower-only requests need a fit check before paid planning.
Is a curbless walk-in shower a good idea?
For many homeowners, yes: it's sleek, easy to clean, and future-proof for aging in place. It requires proper floor sloping, which is why it costs a little more, but done right it's our most-requested style.
How do you keep a walk-in shower from leaking?
Full waterproofing behind the tile with a proven membrane system, a properly sloped pan, and correct drain installation. Ask for the installation system and inspection steps in the written scope.
